On the Road 1 May 21, 2006
Dear Family and Friends,
It is Wednesday morning and we are camped in Uclulet right by the harbour. It absolutely poured (read deluge ) rain during the night last night. In fact you might say, the weather hasn’t been a treat so far. You have to try to function between storms as far as camp chores. We spent two nights in Parksville at a private campsite next to Rathtrevor (spelling?) Beach. The Provincial Park was full but despite the long weekend we didn’t have to stay at Camp Walmart but we probably should have because we spent a whole day out in the malls buying the things we forgot or never knew we needed, like a little hook to hang a garbage bag beside the stove and sink. A putski item till you try to cook something.
There were two seals barking (Robert says they must have been mating they were so loud) at each other as they swam across the harbour last night.
The barking reminds me of the start of our shakedown adventure. We left home about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday and got to the ferry in lots of time for the 3:00 p.m. sailing. At 1;00 we were sitting on the deck at Bay Moorings enjoying the sunshine and lunch with a glass of wine, recovering from the $125.00 ferry fee. By 2;30 we were back in the car and moved up into position to board the ferry. Robert let out a big gasp –He had forgotten to put the license plate on the trailer and it was sitting on the counter at home. What to do? What to do? Well of course we had to go back but that meant backing out of the lineup. Those of you who know me well will know my reaction and those of you who don’t can let your imagination have a field day. To finish up, we backed out of the line without incident, barreled home to get the plate and careened back up the highway just in time to board the 3:00 p.m. ferry. Was there ever any doubt??
Robert insists that I report that he made breakfast and served it to me in bed two days in a row. He is cooking hashbrowns and eggs as I type at the picnic table. We are going to drive up to Tofino today and do a couple of the trails in the
